Translation studies

There is a long tradition of translation research in English Philology at the University of Helsinki even beofre the advent of the English Translation Studies subject to Helsinki in the autumn of 2009. Translation research in English Language and Literature currently focuses for the most part on linguistic and cultural  issues in literary translation, including translation norms and strategies and their cultural and ideological causes and effects. The texts examined range from North American to West African literature and include texts written for children. Outside the literary sphere, there is interest in certain special circumstances affecting the translation process.

Doctoral students work on their individual projects under the supervision of Dr Ritva Leppihalme, and are mostly self-financed. There is considerable cooperation with the translation research seminar run by Professor Andrew Chesterman.
