Professor of Finnish Literature, University of Helsinki 1998–

Director of the Finnish Graduate School of Literary Studies 2007-2011

Leader of the project Styles of Mimesis 2008 - 2010

Research interests

Literary history and genre theory, conceptions of literature from Romanticism to early Modernism, mimesis in literature and literary theory.

Current research projects

1) The project Styles of Mimesis started in January 2008 with Pirjo Lyytikäinen as the leader and with four post doc researchers. The project explores the ways and styles in which literature produces its peculiar reality-effects and negotiates its relationship to value-systems connecting it to the world of everyday experience and ethics as well as to different ideologies, world views and fields of knowledge. It brings together, in a new way but in the spirit of Erich Auerbach's classical study Mimesis , the interconnected even though often separately studied questions of style and mimesis and, from this starting point, opens up a discussion on the interconnections not only of style and literary representation but on their relationship to the ways literary texts convey ethical values as well as to emotional cognition drawing upon cognitive approaches to literature . The individual research projects on various literary texts which unite several academic disciplines all explore important aspects of this general field of study, thus combining the general theoretical framework with empirical study of literary works.

2) The project Leena Krohn and “Other Ways of Seeing” is the first large-scale study of Leena Krohn, one of the foremost contemporary authors in Finland . The study is an inter-textual and contextual study of Krohn's poetics and themes with contact points to the work done in the project Styles of Mimesis . Krohn's texts are seen in a dialogue with various genres, traditions and literary currents, thus bringing forth issues of literary representation and style. The aim of the project is to publish a monograph in Finnish on Leena Krohn and, as “by-products” of the consideration of the themes and poetical structures in Leena Krohn's works, a series of theoretical articles on mimesis and allegory, to be written and published in English, French, and Finnish.
